Throw Back Thursday – Aviation 1st Birthday Party

I’m using the guise of Throw Back Thursday to post some old photos from my son’s aviation themed first birthday party. The husband is the real aviation fan, having a degree in aviation maintenance, though airplanes have quickly grown on the little man. Where else to have an airplane-themed party other than the local airport? Ours has an enormous rec room in the banquet that served as both a blank slate as well as a convenient place to trap lots of toddling babies.

A runway led the way to the rec room where guests were greeted with a custom hangar banner. We had over 40 guests help us celebrate our little man’s big day! We kept food simple with basic snacks. My husband’s cousin works for an airlines and managed to grab us some legit paper napkins and wing pins for everyone–bonus! After purchasing a huge roll of 12″ wide black paper, we created runway-converted table runners and laid out airplanes for little guests to enjoy.

I stressed big time over the cake because little man wasn’t really eating solids yet. I can’t remember the exact recipe, but his cake was a combo of spiced sweet potatoes and coconut flour with whipped coconut cream for the icing!

Our little guests also enjoyed a few games–we had an airplane toss and pin the propeller on the airplane. And by now you’ve noticed the painfully obvious mistake with the clouds backdrop. “Oh, let’s cover the whole room with cloud paper!” I said, and we did, because by golly I paid a pretty penny for yards of that stuff and at that point I did not care if the clouds were floating the wrong way!
